about

The seed of this song was planted when I saw a photo on a friend's instagram page of a katydid on a branch. It was in what's called its "teneral" stage, which means it had just molted and, in its newness, was soft, extremely vulnerable, and so pale it was almost translucent. Of course this brought to mind the ways in which I have felt to be a ghost of myself after inner revolutions, clinging to whatever ground is there for me to hold and hoping no one sees me.
As the song grew, I realized it was speaking even more clearly to the state of many animals today; threatened, displaced, and powerless over the ever-encroaching humans around them. Another friend of mine texted me one morning suggesting I write a song about the last animal left of an endangered species. I think most songwriters agree that when someone says "you should write a song about this", the very last thing you should do is write a song about that. But this one got me. I mean, at some point of course, there is ONE left, and that's a crazy concept. I had actually already written the chorus, but wasn't completely sure of its meaning yet. This solidified it.
The production of this song was a new adventure for me. I've done a couple of electronic sounding songs before, but only with someone else at the board pushing the buttons and turning the nobs (namely producer Jim Eno). This was my first foray into creating these sounds for myself. Wow, it took forever. And I still definitely don't understand anything about the synth I used (OP-1), but I pushed record when I liked something and came up with some sort of mess that resembled a song. From there I went into the studio with Danny Reisch and re-recorded the vocals and some guitars, got weird on some piano stuff, and mixed the song. I've been searching for a sustainable way to make music that doesn't cripple me financially but also allows me to play with more sounds than just a demo, and this process felt really great to me.
I know this song tackles a grim topic, but I hope it helps you find your way through it, as it has for me.
50% of sales will go to the National Wildlife Federation until the end of Feb, 2019.
Thank you so much for listening. It means the world to me.

Who Will Be The Only One

Seven stars hang over me, I tasted salt long before I saw the sea
My arrowed tongue has spoke of thee, "what held you once now will come to set you free"
Then come the night, take off my skin, I must have died long before I did begin
Though I have heard that voice before, "what kept you close now will hold you there no more"

And when the dark does come, who'll be the only one to arrive
Who will be the only one?
After the sinking sun, who'll be the only one to remain
Who will be the only one?

Silver spun, oh dust of bone, I was a ghost long before my heart was known
Oh and even then I heard it so, "what carried you now has come to let you go"
By morning light I'll be anew, but you saw me long before I did see you
Seven stars, they circle me, what's left to hold now with nothing holding thee?

And when the dark does come, who'll be the only one to arrive
Who will be the only one?
After the sinking sun, who'll be the only one to remain
Who will be the only one?
